This afternoon, we spent an arduous hour or so with David Beckham having drinks to celebrate (and sample) his new Haig Club whisky.

During this time, the businessman, model and former footballer answered questions about everything from his family life to his favourite tattoos. Here’s what he had to say…

On his perfect Sunday afternoon

“I love an old man pub and having a great Sunday roast in front of a log fire surrounded by lots of old people. That’s my ideal situation. I have a great local near me and I go in there so much no one bothers me anymore. I’ve been in there with Tom Cruise and they didn’t bother him either.”

On cooking for the family

“My kids always want me to make pasta. They absolutely love it, so I wanted to be able to make them great pasta. Now I make linguine all the time for them.”

On sporting retirement

“Nothing will ever feel as comfortable to me as being on the pitch. I’ll always miss the game – it’s what I wanted to do as a kid. But I played for 22 years and I was ready to finish – I was 38 years old by that point and I had won everything I wanted. I was ready to jump into something else, and had a lot lined up before I left.”

On his career high

“When I was made England captain. Winning the treble with Manchester United was big, but playing for my country meant the most to me.”

On his favourite tattoos

“The ones with my children’s names on. I probably will have another done soon – I just get them done whenever I’m inspired.”

On turning Victoria Beckham onto whisky

“When I first showed Victoria this bottle, she, was more interested in the colour and the shape of the bottle because creatively that’s what she’s amazing at. I asked her to try some and she said she wasn’t a whisky drinker, but she did in the end and loved it. I don’t want this to be just for gentleman, but for women too.”

On his ideal hangover cure

“Take an Alka Seltzer before bed. I carry them everywhere just in case. That’s something my granddad told me.”

On how he likes his whisky

“I’m an old fashioned man, so I like an Old Fashioned.”
