With a 13-year run as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, and an eponymous lingerie line, it’s no wonder that Heidi Klum has strong opinions on the topic of lingerie.

When it comes to her own line, Klum believes in embracing more of a natural silhouette, hence her “more boobs, less bra” design mantra.

“The big padded push-up is definitely a has-been look—it was a big trend 10 to 20 years ago. That’s all we wore — the bigger the boob, the more under-the-neck, the better, she says. “Now I think women want to look more real,” she notes, before adding, impishly, “or maybe it is because there are more implants now and they don’t need the push-up.”

“I think women just want more of a natural fit. And the industry is catching on — you see more bralettes, more triangles, fewer push-ups.”

Another lingerie trend Klum is glad to see the back of: The pathological fear of showing a bit of nipple.

“That was always a thing. ‘You shouldn’t see the nipple through the lace!’ Yes, but then what’s the point of the pretty lace if you put all the fabric behind it? And it’s only a nipple, it’s not something bad.”

“People are a little nipple-obsessed, especially in America. I don’t know about Singapore—are they nipple-obsessed in Singapore?” she enquires, murmuring sympathetically when this reporter shares horror stories of wearing pasties in the 1990s.

“In Germany, we’re not nipple-obsessed. People are, like, ‘Free the nipple’ — they’re out, you see them on TV, even in the newspaper. It’s not a big thing. Here, I still sometimes have to fight for lingerie where you see a little nipple coming through. But they’re getting better,” she smiles. “Now you can actually see nipples, whoa.”
