Earlier this week, Kate Middleton debuted a short new chop and bouncy bangs that left all of us speechless. We have been admiring/envying her flowing chestnut tresses for YEARS, so we were admittedly surprised to see her sporting such a *practical* style.

It turns out that’s exactly what she was going for. “It’s a practical style and a great option for a mom who has had long hair, who has a busy life and is short on time,” Middleton’s longtime hair stylist Richard Ward told People. “It’s much easier to look after and takes half the time to blow dry.”

Usually we’re all about fashion first, but to be fair, Kate Middleton is a mother of two AND a duchess with an agenda full of royal obligations. Our schedule probably isn’t half as busy as that and even we can barely find the time to wash and style our hair on a regular basis. (Dry shampoo is LIFE.)

Even if it is somewhat mom-ish, it’s royal mom-ish—and she still looks perfectly glamorous because, well, she’s Kate. “It still has the feeling of long hair,” Ward adds. “It has more bouncy movement because of the long layers and shorter length.”

As with all things the Duchess does, we have no doubt people will soon be copying her sophisticated new look and flocking to the salon with her picture in hand. Ward agrees: “I’m sure the new style will be equally as popular, as her look will always be hugely followed and copied. If you look like she does, pretty much anything will suit you!”

Ain’t that the truth.
