Film and TV icon Meryl Streep has been cast as the lead in Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical The Prom.

Streep – who is currently making waves as Mary-Louise in Big Little Lies season 2 – will take the starring role of Dee Dee Allen, a self-obsessed Broadway star played by Beth Leavel on-stage, according to Deadline.

Ariana Grande has been cast as closeted, popular teen girl Alyssa (Isabelle McCalla on-stage) who is dating fellow teen Emma, who is the centre of the show’s plot.

Streep’s BLL2 co-star Nicole Kidman will play Broadway actress Angie Dickinson (Angie Schworer on-stage), while James Corden has been cast as Dee Dee’s self-obsessed and out and proud Broadway star friend Barry Glickman, played by Brooks Ashmanskas on-stage.

The show follows a group of Broadway stars as they arrive in a small town in Indiana to help Emma go to her school’s prom after she’s been banned from taking a girl as her date.

It’s reported that Murphy will get underway directing the film in December for an autumn 2020 release in cinemas, before it launches on the streaming service.

Meanwhile, fans have called for Streep to win every TV award there is after her captivating performance as Perry’s bereaved mother Mary Louise in Big Little Liesseason 2.
