Although modern architecture can often be breathtaking with its innovative structures and minimalistic approach to design, the homely, quaint lodgings of old can be a lovely and sorely needed reprieve. Unfortunately for all of us, time travel hasn’t been discovered yet, but we check out a few vintage themed hotels that transport you to the past, at least for a while.

40 WiNKS, London

We have a feeling Marie Antoinette would feel right at home in this lavish residence. Topping the list is 40 WiNKS, which boasts a star-studded guest list including Helen Mirren and Orlando Bloom, and numbers among Harper’s BAZAAR’s own “8 most whimsical hotels in the world” hot list –all for good reason. The locale's mesmerizing mismatch of colours and prominent décor has made an enchanting backdrop for many a photoshoot, and will make for an equally thrilling lodging experience.

Paper Factory Hotel, New York

The signature dark, earthy tones of the vintage aesthetic run rampant in this hotel. Originally a paper factory (no prizes for guessing how this place got its name), the space was refurbished using as much of the original furnishing as possible. What this means for visitors is that they can expect a cosy haven with an authentically 70’s edge. Apart from the time-honoured setting provided by the hotel itself, fans of the old school way of life can get their fill at the local museum and on a rooftop farm, all within walking distance.

Brody House, Budapest

It doesn’t have the whimsical pastels we loved in the Wes Anderson film but this Budapest hotel is just as grand. What we love about this boutique guesthouse is that its 11 rooms are all uniquely designed and filled with antiques like Victorian-style furniture and rustic wooden paneling. Of course, no list of vintage stays would be complete without a mention of wines. The hotel offers packages for wine and palinka tours, among other things.

The Rectory Hotel, Malmesbury

Straying from the deep, woody hues of most vintage lodgings, The Rectory Hotel is unabashedly bright yet unmistakably retro. Complete with a heated outdoor pool, the richly embellished Rectory Hotel is a quaint English pastoral retreat with the Mr and Mrs Smith stamp of approval. What makes it even cooler is that it’s pup friendly (sorry cat lovers), so you don’t have to hunt down a sitter for your fur kids while you stroll along the serene British countryside.

Mustang Nero Hotel, Bangkok

Closer to home and situated in many a Singaporeans’ go-to vacation spot is the Mustang Nero. Its naturalistic take on the vintage scene sees bare brick walls trussed up with wood paneling, dozens of plants and the occasional animal mount.
