Britney Spears's Conservatorship Is Finally Over After 13 Years
For the first time in over a decade, the pop star will finally be back in control of her own life.

Britney Spears is finally free.
On Friday, Judge Brenda Penny ruled that the "Toxic" singer's 13-year long conservatorship would finally come to end, according to CNN. For years, Spears's fervent fans have called attention to the #FreeBritney movement, expressing their concern over Spears — a seemingly capable and profitable pop star — being held under the personal, professional, and financial control of her father for over a decade. Judge Brenda Penny's decision comes after Spears's emotional court address detailing her trauma under the legal arrangement back in June, and just ahead of the star's 40th birthday next month.

According to Spears's attorney, Matthew Rosengart, the singer's assets will now be transferred from the singer's conservator to her personal trust. No medical evaluation of Spears was requested in order for the termination of the conservatorship to be approved. In addition, Rosengart reportedly said that a "safety net" will be put in place to assure the safety of the star's finances.
Spears wrote about her nerves leading up to today's hearing in a now-deleted Instagram post earlier this week.
"This week is gonna be very interesting for me 🤭 !!!," wrote Spears alongside the post. I haven't prayed for something more in my life 🙏🏼 !!!"
The superstar also shared a clip of herself — via her fiancé, Sam Asghari's Instagram account — wearing a t-shirt that read "#FreeBritney: It's a Human Rights Movement" ahead of the court ruling.

Though today's ruling was a momentous one, Spears's legal fight with her family is far from over. The pop star's attorney has previously stated he fully intends to investigate her father's handling of her finances and estate over the years, as well as an investigation into the severity of the security surveillance Britney was under at the height of her conservatorship.
