An official synopsis for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child released today reveals that the upcoming West End show will focus not on Harry, but on his youngest son, Albus Severus.

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children,” reads the synopsis. “While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Although author JK Rowling had already stated that the show was “definitely not a prequel”, the title did lead many familiar with Harry’s unhappy childhood to speculate that he was the cursed child in question. Instead, the play will be the sequel fans have wanted since the final novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released in 2007, set 19 years later.

The production, which was devised by Rowling, has been split into two parts. The idea is that you watch the two plays one after the other, either on the same day or on consecutive nights.

The play will premiere next summer at the Palace Theatre in Manchester.
