All the major film festivals, from Cannes to Venice, are coming together for a special online event.
We Are One: A Global Film Festival will be hosted on YouTube and includes contributions from 20 international, such as Berlin, Toronto, BFI London, Tribeca, Mumbai and Sundance.
Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, who co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, came up with the idea of hosting an online event after being forced to cancel this year’s festival.
“We often talk about film’s uniquely powerful role in inspiring and uniting people across borders and differences to help heal the world,” explained Rosenthal, reports the BBC.
“All of the world needs healing right now.”
The event will be free to access on 29 May and includes films, shorts, documentaries, music and conversations, with a full schedule being released nearer the time.
The Cannes Film Festival was postponed last month due to current coronavirus restrictions; its president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux say they are “proud” to be involved in the online event.
"We are proud to join with our partner festivals to spotlight truly extraordinary films and talent, allowing audiences to experience both the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic personalities of each festival," they explained.
It's thought that annual festivals in Toronto, Venice and London are expected to go ahead in the autumn.
