Kristen Stewart makes her first appearance as Princess Diana in a new still released from the upcoming Pablo Larraín film, Spencer, which focuses on the life of the late royal. Wearing a veiled boater hat, pussy bow blouse, and red jacket, Stewart channels the princess's iconic late-'80s/early-'90s fashion—as well as her feathery blonde hair and piercing gaze. Her red coat is actually vintage Chanel, sourced from the fashion house's Fall-Winter 1988/1989 collection.

Titled after Lady Di's maiden name, Spencer will follow Diana over the course of her holiday weekend at the royal family's Sandringham estate, when she decides to end her marriage with Prince Charles. In real life, the royal couple announced their separation in 1992 before formally divorcing in 1996. The film is slated to release this fall, per a press release, as 2022 will mark the 25th anniversary of the princess's death. Production will happen in the U.K. and Germany.

Stewart's casting was first announced last June. Joining her in the cast are Timothy Spall (Secrets & Lies), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water),and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Prometheus). The screenplay is by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The film is a "dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life," Stewart said in a statement. "It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her."

The actress has previously opened up about the pressure of assuming the role. "It's hard not to feel protective over her," she told Jimmy Kimmel last year. "She was so young ... everyone's perspective is different, and there's no way to get everything right ... what is fact in relation to personal experience."

Stewart's portrayal of Diana arrives on the heels of Emma Corrin's performance as the royal in the fourth season of Netflix's The Crown. Elizabeth Debicki will succeed her in the role in Season 5, which will likely premiere in 2022.
