A Stylish Millennial's Guide To Modern CNY Decor

Modern ways to decorate your home for the lunar new year

Home Decor

With Chinese New Year looming right around the corner, it's time to swap out your Christmas & New Year's Eve party decorations, which are probably still up (don't worry, we don't judge). Traditional pieces such as upside-down "Fu" (fortune) characters and kumquat trees might not gel entirely with a modern home. It's time to update the way we accessorise our homes for the lunar new year in a chic and modern way.

If your home is mostly monochromatic, adding pops of red is a great way to be festive in a subtle manner. A red geometric vase holding a few branches of pussy willow, cut at varying lengths is the perfect addition to the living room. It's festive without being overly oriental.

Pillows are the easiest way to transform a room. Get a couple of pillow covers that align with your desired theme and boom! You are good to go. Bronze gold pillows will look ultra festive on a white couch, whilst still adding a classy touch. Otherwise opt for accent pillows with a more oriental design; Just one or two will do.

Red packets are an integral part of CNY but some traditional ones can be a tad dated and on the tacky side. Take matters into your own hands and create your own designs. They don't even have to be red in colour. Display them on side tables before giving them away (or you can keep them for yourself).

Paper lanterns are a simple way to get festive. They are easy to set up and remove. We suggest the classic Chinese lantern shapes but in black and white to elevate the room. Choose LED versions as they are less of a fire hazard and faff to deal with. Hang a couple in a row or in clusters at various areas of your home.

Along with the paper lanterns, you can also opt for paper flowers to add colour to your living space. There are several tutorials for DIY versions of paper flowers, so if you are itching to get crafty, now's the time. Pair the pink and red flowers with a white cylindrical vase and wait to be showered by compliments for your handy work.

We understand that a floor lamp is a more permanent addition to your home. However, a cargo floor lamp like this one from Schema has an Eastern silhouette, modernized with metals and structured lines. It's a beautiful piece of furniture that is chic and accidentally festive on occasions as this.

If you have a bare wall to spare, frame an art print to celebrate the year of the rooster in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Not only does it add character to a room, it is relatively inexpensive as well. We love this one by Sharon Turner, found in Society 6.

If you want to add just one thing to the bedroom to get it CNY ready, this would be it. The cut-out zodiac patterns go well with a white bed and are good to use every year. These comforters are a bit of an investment but hey, at least they are functional too.

We can't forget the bathroom, now can we? Shower curtains are relatively easy to install and very practical as well. The ornamental design on this one is both festive and sophisticated.
