While 2016 has been a, well, interesting year overall, it's been a great year for social media. And now that the year is (finally) wrapping up, Instagram has crunched the numbers about how often you scrolled through the app to like and follow your favorite celebs. It turns out female pop stars dominated the list of most-followed celebrities in 2016, but you might be surprised about which guys made the list. Check out the top 10 most followed celebrities of the year.

1. SELENA GOMEZ: 103 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Despite her fairly rough year, plus opening up about her struggle with depression and anxiety, Selena still continues to maintain an insanely devoted fan base. The singer tops off the most followed list with a whopping 103 million followers and is the most followed person on Instagram.

2. TAYLOR SWIFT: 93.9 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Taylor Swift also had an eventful year full of new loves, breakups, and secretly recorded phone calls, which lead the star to go off the Instagram grid for most of the summer. But the singer returned in full force for Halloween and most recently for Thanksgiving. T-Swift follows her bestie Selena, on Insta and on this list, and comes in second place for the most followed person this year.

3. ARIANA GRANDE: 90.2 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Coming in at number three is the tiny but strong-voiced "Side to Side" singer, Ariana Grande. The 23-year-old is known to post pictures of her grandmother, current boyfriends, and even pal Kylie Jenner's Lip Kits. Basically, she is all of us.

4. BEYONCÉ: 89.2 MILLION FOLLOWERS

5. KIM KARDASHIAN: 87.8 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Kim hasn't posted an Insta since her robbery this October, but her numbers continue to grow. Here's hoping her life will go back to normal soon, and that "normal" will include lots of selfies.

6. CRISTIANO RONALDO: 82.3 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Leave it this guy to break up Instagram's list of ladies. The soccer star comes in at number six for the most followed people on the social network, and with a mixture of cute posts with his son, winning trophies, random celebrities, and of course, himself shirtless, it's no surprise that Ronaldo is the most followed guy on Instagram.

7. KYLIE JENNER: 79.5 MILLION FOLLOWERS

Though we don't have Kim on Insta at the moment, we'll always have Kylie—and all her envy-inducing (ab) poses to entertain us and keep us following.

8. DWAYNE "THE ROCK" JOHNSON: 71 MILLION FOLLOWERS

People magazine's sexiest man alive takes the number eight spot, adding another good-looking guy to Instagram's female-dominated list. The actor—who is often portrayed as the most macho of macho men—shows a much softer side on his Instagram profile with photos of his dogs, his family, his work with charities, his celebrity friends from Kevin Hart to Lin-Manuel Miranda, and lots of inspirational captions.

Don't dismiss Queen Nicki Minaj. The rapper and frequent Ariana Grande collaborator has nearly 70 million followers with posts ranging from sexy photoshoots to hilarious memes and pretty much everything in between.

With almost 70 million followers, Victoria's Secret wings, and several other massive ad campaigns, Kendall is simply living up to her supermodel lifestyle. Even with a brief disappearance from Instagram this year, the 21-year-old model's following still grew.
