Yesterday at Windsor Castle, members of the Royal Family (including Queen Elizabeth II) gathered to celebrate the Order of the Garter, the highest ranking in British chivalry. The order was first founded by King Edward II in 1348, and has been carried on through generations for almost 700 years. According to the official royal website, "The Knights, now both male and female, used to be limited to aristocracy, but today they are chosen from a variety of backgrounds, in recognition for their public service."
The Garter Day procession is a full day event at Windsor Castle, and includes velvet robes, plumed hats, and a marching band. This year, the Queen is celebrating two new additions to the Order of the Garter: Dame Mary Fagan and the Viscount Brookeborough.
