As one of Singapore’s most in demand radio DJs and TV personalities, Sonia Chew is a woman who needs little introduction. Having hosted the award-winning web series, Travel SSBD (Same Same But Different), the Singaporean personality knows a thing or two about travel. For her most recent adventure, Chew teamed up with Mercedes-Benz Singapore to highlight the beautiful city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia which is known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage.

Check out the video above, which was shot exclusively using the iPhone XS Max by Nicole Quek, to see all of the highlights from Chew’s trip and read her top tips for travelling in style below.

What do you love most about travelling?

I love living like the locals and having the freedom to explore the country at my own discretion and not be governed by strict schedules.

What was the most memorable trip you’ve taken so far?

My recent trip to Spain and Portugal was one to remember. For the many places I’ve flown to before for my travel programme, I’ve never had the chance to explore this part of Europe. My boyfriend and I decided to take some time out of our hectic schedules in Singapore, and it didn’t take us long to realise that sangrias and siestas were right up our alley!

Are there any places on your bucket list you have yet to visit?

Iceland, Bolivia, Fiji and Morocco are at the top of my list. As I get older, I’m less inclined to visit bustling cities. I want to experience things that leave me in awe.

What are the three beauty essentials you can’t travel without?

Dr Jart face masks, Chanel’s Les Beiges healthy glow lip balm and Heliocare sunscreen.

What does your airport style look like? Are you team comfort or fashion?

I try to combine the two. I know not everyone agrees, but sweatpants can be cute. I also always keep a cap and tinted glasses in my carry-on bag just in case I have a rough flight and I still need to look decent when I land.

We know you love good food. What was your favourite meal in Indonesia?

It’s got to be Gudeg. It’s a type of jackfruit stew/curry that has a very unique flavour that’s hard to come by in Singapore.

What are your top tips for savvy travelling?

Split your luggage into two – one for check in and one for carry-on. I’ve heard too many incidents of friends getting their luggage transferred to the wrong destination or worse, gone completely missing. My wardrobe is very important to me when I travel so I make sure there’s at least two cute outfits in my cabin luggage just in case. Skincare is also important so I pack loads of face masks, especially if I’m going somewhere cold.

What kind of luggage do you like to travel with?

I go most places with my sturdy Montblanc and Rimowa cases. My Goyard tote also goes everywhere with me – it’s so light weight and I can fit so much stuff in there.
