Sydney Might Just Be The Perfect Destination For A Romantic Wedding And A Quick Getaway

When people think of Sydney, they think of sun, surf, sand, the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach. These are not bad references, and they are world-class attractions at that. But there’s really a whole lot more to this city Down Under that goes far beyond its sunny beaches.

I recently got married in Sydney and wanted something that included million-dollar views of the harbour from a bird’s-eye view, as well as an experience on the water for many of my guests who have never been to Sydney. We decided on Hyatt Regency Sydney as it is nestled at Darling Harbour. The Hyatt Regency seamlessly blends heritage charm with contemporary design. The Grand Ballroom, with its 850sqm of space and panoramic views, is perfect for grand events. But it was the impressive Upper Deck space, which offers an intimate setting with floor-to-ceiling windows, a bird’s-eye view of Darling Harbour and an outdoor terrace for 40 guests, that made it ideal for an intimate wedding.

Enter executive chef Sven Ullrich. His warm, hospitable and effervescent nature made it a joy to work together and he was personally involved in every step of our journey for the wedding banquet. A modern Australian set menu of wild-caught salmon, kingfish sashimi, lobster bisque, barramundi, rack of lamb or beef eye fillet (tenderloin) brought out the best of farm and ocean produce in this land of plenty. But it was the desserts that Ullrich excelled at. From an orange poppy ricotta gateaux to a fig frangipani tart and a delightful lychee rose coconut charlotte, my guests and I were blown away by the selection, finesse and quality of the food.

For those looking to unwind, the impressive Zephyr Sky Bar is the crowning jewel of the hotel, with stunning panoramic views of Darling Harbour and twinkling city lights. The open-air rooftop bar offers a range of classic and signature cocktails along with a seasonal menu of sharing plates. With breathtaking views, exceptional food and an extensive drinks list, Zephyr is the perfect venue for celebrating special occasions and enjoying a taste of sky-high luxury. And don’t miss the elevated Gin High Tea in the Lobby Lounge, a delightful affair featuring sweet and savoury delicacies paired with local gins and artisan teas.

Finally, surprise your guests with a delightful luncheon cruise with Journey Beyond Cruise Sydney. The Spirit of Migloo has a capacity of 90 people and offers one of the more exclusive and intimate harbour cruises.

Guests can choose from a two-and-a-half-hour, all-inclusive, two-course lunch cruise or a three-hour, all-inclusive, three-course dinner cruise. Each menu is carefully curated and showcases some of the best produce and wines to come from New South Wales.
