The Complete Guide To 'Russian Doll' Season 2

Sweet birthday baby, it's finally coming back.

Russian Doll Natasha Lyonne

It's been three long years since Netflix dropped the first season of Russian Doll, the wry and heart-wrenching Emmy-winning series created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler. Now, sweet birthday baby is finally returning to our screens for a second season.

If you need a quick refresher, season 1 saw Nadia (played by Lyonne) caught in a time loop in which she dies every single day, only to reemerge on the night of her 36th birthday party, thrown by her friend Maxine (Greta Lee). Eventually, she comes across Alan (Charlie Barnett), a man also experiencing the same fatal time loop.

Ahead, everything we know about the forthcoming season.

What will season 2 be about?

The second season takes place four years after the finale, in which Nadia and Alan have —at least as far as we know — finally escaped the time loop. Per Netflix's official synopsis:

Set four years after Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) escaped mortality’s time loop together, season two of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential thematics through an often humorous and sci-fi lens. Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.

"It's definitely a wild ride. It is deep, and deeply off-the-wall," Lyonne teased to Entertainment Weekly. "I genuinely think the joy of the game is to watch it with fresh eyes as much as you can in order to be taken by the story."

When will season 2 be released?

While an official date has yet to be announced, we can expect Russian Doll to return by this spring.

Like other series' have experience, production was delayed following the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, Deadline reported in March 2020.

Who will be in the cast?

Lyonne and Barnett will reprise their roles as time loop survivors Nadia and Alan, and Lee is also expected to return as Nadia's eccentric friend Maxine. Annie Murphy of Schitt's Creek has also joined the cast for season 2, TV Line reported last year.
