1. Youth

Sharon Horgan stars as Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee looking for sex and love while caring for her ailing parents and parenting a college-aged son who should really be grown up by now. Horgan created the series and wrote all eight episodes, so expect the same painfully relatable humour as her earlier shows Catastrophe and Bad Sisters. Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte, Aran Murphy (as Alex’s son Ruari) and Robbie Gee star alongside her. It’s a funny, messy look at midlife dating, family obligations and the sandwich-generation squeeze.

2. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18

More than 20 years in, the gang is still running Paddy’s Pub into the ground. Season 18 picks up from last season’s finale with the wedding of Frank (Danny DeVito) and Samantha (Carol Kane), the poultry heiress he chose on a Golden Bachelor spoof. For long-time fans, you might realise that the premiere’s title, “Frank Marries a Corpse”, suggests newlywed bliss isn’t on the cards. The McPoyles also return for the first time since season 16, Mac (Rob McElhenney) takes on a LARPer, and the season also takes on inheritances, automation, conspiracy theories and the rise of sobriety culture. The season will run to 10 episodes, two more than usual. With critics already calling this one of the show’s strongest seasons, this isn’t a show (or marathon) to miss.

3. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story

The fourth chapter of the true-crime anthology, following the Dahmer, Menendez and Ed Gein stories, turns to one of America’s most infamous unsolved murders. Lizzie Borden was accused of killing her father and stepmother with a hatchet in 1892 and was acquitted at trial. Ella Beatty plays her, making her the anthology’s first female lead. Netflix has pitched it as a twisted escape fantasy about a repressed daughter and the family maid (Vicky Krieps), trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, who slip into a shared world of sex, power and revenge. Charlie Hunnam, who previously played Ed Gein, returns as Lizzie’s father, Andrew. It takes big liberties with history, so go in for the gothic melodrama rather than a documentary retelling.

Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau) is a gifted 16-year-old single sculler whose promising career is derailed by a family scandal. She moves with her mother Ella (Jessica Paré) to the East Coast and enrols at the elite Easton Prep, only to discover there’s no girls’ rowing team. Her only way back onto the water is to become coxswain of the school’s notoriously chaotic boys’ varsity crew. Old money, ruthless competition and a team that doesn’t want to be told what to do all stand in her way, and she ends up in a love triangle between the arrogant captain Josh Regis (Samuel Braun) and Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark), a quiet but fiercely determined local.

Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, a seasoned career diplomat who is unexpectedly installed as the US ambassador to the UK. Rufus Sewell plays her husband Hal, a charismatic diplomat in his own right; and their marriage is as volatile as the geopolitical crises Kate is trying to defuse. The show’s appeal is how it plays the two against each other; a tense diplomatic standoff and a bitter domestic argument carry equal weight, and the witty, fast-talking dialogue keeps both moving. If you like your political dramas sharp, glossy and a little bit romantic, this is the one for you.

Netflix adapts John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, a sweeping multigenerational saga about the intertwined Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley. Florence Pugh stars as the manipulative Cathy Ames, one of literature’s most notorious antagonists, opposite Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask. Zoe Kazan—whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 James Dean film—adapts the seven-episode limited series. It explores trauma and repair, love and betrayal, and duty versus free will.

7. Sterling Point

Sterling Point follows 17-year-old twins Annie and Connor Jacobson, raised in New York City by their adoptive father Steven, who learn that their maternal grandfather has died and left them property in the remote town of Sterling Point. Out of her element at first, Annie makes friends with a group of local teens including Oona (Bo Bragason), Ellis (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie) and Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), and she finds that life there feels more real than the one she left behind. A family secret drives the plot, but the show is just as much about found family, ensemble friendships and slow-burn romance. Its soundtrack mixes trendy tracks with throwback gems, and it has the same lakeside-summer feel as The Summer I Turned Pretty and Outer Banks.

The mixed-faith rom-com returns with Kristen Bell playing Joanne, a sharp-tongued, agnostic podcaster who falls for Noah (Adam Brody), a rabbi, in this warm, funny rom-com created by Erin Foster. The two have instant chemistry, but their families, their communities and their very different worldviews make things complicated. The series works because it treats the obstacles seriously without losing its sense of humour, and the supporting cast of meddling siblings and parents adds plenty of laughs. It’s easy to settle into if you want a comfort watch with romantic tension.

Off Campus, inspired by Elle Kennedy’s bestselling books, skates onto our screens with the hunky Briar University hockey team in tow. Meet Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli), the campus’s golden boy on ice, and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), a music student with a crush and good test scores. Their unlikely deal? Let’s just say it’s the kind of arrangement that starts with a fake relationship and later turns into something a little more than friendship. With a lineup of romance, friendship, college chaos, and enough hockey-player eye candy to fill an arena, this series has already scored big with BookTok fans.

Twelve Golden Ticket winners, each with a partner of their choosing, step inside Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory to compete in a series of games, tests and temptations set in a retro-futuristic dreamscape. It’s billed as a high-stakes social experiment, so the challenges are mental as much as physical: players have to adapt, strategise and keep their cool as things get strange. The nine-episode competition series is based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and pays tribute to the 1971 film, and it features a recreated Gene Wilder voice, made with the blessing of the actor’s estate. Expect sweets, schemes and plenty of chaos.

11. Kian’s Bizarre B&B Season 2

Webtoon artist Kian84 is back as the owner of a guesthouse built entirely from his own sketches, and this time he’s reopened it in the snowy mountains of Daegwallyeong in the dead of winter. Volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung, 2PM’s Lee Junho and LE SSERAFIM’s Kazuha join as the new staff, and they spend as much time needling their eccentric boss as they do looking after guests. His ideas get wilder this season, from sleeping around a campfire like prehistoric people to floating in the sky from a giant balloon. The show comes from the producer behind Hyori’s Homestay, so it favours patient, low-stakes observation and scenery over manufactured drama. Season 1, set on the island of Ulleungdo and featuring BTS’s Jin, was a global non-English hit, so this one comes with a built-in following.

12. The Scandal

Son Ye Jin, in her comeback role, and Ji Chang Wook star in this steamy Joseon-era retelling of Dangerous Liaisons, adapted from the 2003 Korean film, Untold Scandal. Lady Cho and Cho Won play a game of seduction with Hui-yeon at its centre, using charm, manipulation and desire as weapons in a world of strict social rules. The eight-episode drama is all lavish period detail and cat-and-mouse tension, and it’s a good pick for fans of dark, slow-burn romance.
