What To Buy For Your Home From 2019's Most Fashionable Holiday Destinations

We've all been there - you're having such a great summer holiday that you want a souvenir to bring home with you. You've long since learnt that the kaftans and overpriced linen tunics that seem a good idea at the time never work as well when back home, so investing in something for our home seems more sensible. But where do you start? Which countries specialise in which interior must-haves? Where should you buy ceramics, and where is best for cushions or rattan mats? We spoke to homewares maestro, Lisa Mehydene, the founder of online interiors destination edit58, to find out what you should take home from 2019's most fashionable holiday destinations.

1. Lisbon: ceramics

"Lisbon known for its ceramics, so it really is worth indulging whilst you’re here. Whilst I love a cabbage plate as much as the next person, and all the beautiful Portuguese tiles - it was the delicate ceramics of Sara Guerreiro that I found in ‘Anasso’ - a ceramics studio in the heart of the flea market, that caught my eye and came home with me."

2. Ibiza: crockery and colourful cushions

"This party island knows how to have fun and its homewares reflect this too. Head to the mecca, Sluiz Ibiza, and go wild in the aisles for the colourful, playful and unusual homewares on offer - particularly home accessories (think cushions, crockery, pots etc) - that will become a talking point in your home."

3. Mykonos: rugs and runners

"Although the beautiful houses on the island may be white, if you head to the famous Matoyianni Street in Chora, you’ll find a colourful array of hand knotted rugs/runners made by local artisans. The perfect item to roll up in your suitcase and bring home. These look great in bathrooms and kitchens."

4. Sicily: ceramics

"Another holiday hotspot for picking up local ceramics. Here there are four main towns that specialise, each with their own distinct style - Caltagirone, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Burgio and Sciacca. In each you’ll find ceramics workshops and outlets where you can purchase wares direct from the potters."

5. Beirut: soft furnishings

"My husband was born in Beirut, so I’ve been lucky enough to spends lots of time in this amazing city. Beirut is all about the blending of old and new, and Bokja (a store run by Lebanese designers Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri) does just that, upholstering contemporary furniture in gorgeous vintage textiles, and creating cushions and other soft furnishings which beautifully bring old and new together."

6. Bali: rattan products

"Natural materials (think seagrass, rattan etc) are the order of the day when shopping in Bali. Indulge the boho side of your home aesthetic, picking up placemats, baskets and lighting all handcrafted by local artisans. They will add that cool yet understated look to your interior. Head to Kim Soo in Seminyak for a good range."

7. Istanbul: Anatolian rugs

Another destination in which to indulge in a spot of rug (or ‘carpet’) shopping. Ulgen’s father owns a rug shop in The Grand Bazaar, Istanbul, and has done so for the past 40 years. There’s nothing he doesn’t know about rugs. Make it your first port of call."

8. Tulum: bowls and jugs

"Prepare to re-mortgage if you do indulge here... the pieces aren’t pocket-friendly, but they are beautiful nonetheless. Head to Casa Atica for handcrafted items; bowls, jugs, vases and baskets that manage to be both boho and chic."

9. Paris: candles

Shopping in Paris for me means heading to Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, the best flea/antique market around. Hundreds of stalls, along with warehouses filled to the brim, make this the best place to find an interior gem or two. No trip to Paris is complete without stocking up on scented candles. Cire Trudon is my favourite French brand and their Left Bank scent house is their original branch. The interior is divine, and that’s before we get into the scents. Heaven."

10. Vienna: glassware

"Whilst you can purchase closer to home via Matches Fashion, the Viennese store itself of glassware brand L. Lobmeyr is worth the trip alone. Founded in 1823 and still family-owned to this day, the store showcases the brand's beautiful crystal glass collection."

11. Marrakesh: rugs

"I adore Marrakesh and the wonderful array of locally produced homewares available to buy in the souks. Of course, rug shopping will probably be high on your to-do list (visit La Handira, based in the souk. They have a great range and are very patient!). Also look out for beautiful Tamegroute ceramics. Their deep green glaze and imperfect finish are what make this pottery so unique. A true piece of Morocco to return home with in your hand luggage."

12. Venice: linen

"Go easy on your luggage allowance and invest in Italian linen whilst in Venice. Beautiful hand-embroidered napkins, placemats, tea towels and more. All incredibly chic, of course."

13. Jaipur: fabrics

"No trip to India would be complete without stocking up on the beautiful array of fabrics available. Indian hand-blocked fabrics are my favourite and reflect the hours of work gone into them by those skilled artisans printing the fabrics. Use the fabrics once home for upholstery or simply even creating napkins/tablecloths."
