It’s a well-known fact that the Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace, but where does the rest of her family live? While most members of the royal family maintain several residences—one of the perks of being royal—these are the castles, palaces and royal estates each call home most of the time.

Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s working residence during the week when she and the Duke of Edinburgh are based in London. However, they go to Windsor Castle most weekends, spend each August and September at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and head off to Sandringham House in Norfolk every Christmas.

In 2003, The Prince of Wales made his official London residence Clarence House, which is where the Queen’s Mother lived from 1953 until her death in 2002. Camilla Parker-Bowles helped organize the renovations of the house, which is located next door to St. James’s Palace, and made it her official residence after marrying Charles and becoming the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005. Prince William and Prince Harry also lived here until setting up their own private residences at Kensington Palace in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Since mid-2017, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace has been the Cambridge family’s main residence after William decided to leave his role with the East Anglian Air Ambulance so the couple could focus on their royal duties and Prince George could attend school in London.

Before that, they spent most of their time at Anmer Hall in Norfolk on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

Prince Harry moved into the two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace back in 2013, and Meghan Markle moved in after the couple officially announced their engagement in the fall of 2017.

However, it’s rumored that once they have children, the couple will move into a larger residence in the main part of Kensington Palace, next door to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

In addition to Will and Kate, Meghan and Harry have several other royal neighbors, since Kensington Palace is also the official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

While Princess Anne maintains a London residence at St. James’s Palace, the Queen’s only daughter and her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, spend most of their time at Gatcombe Park in Gloucester. Her daughter, Zara Tindall, moved her family into the country estate back in 2013. Both Princess Anne and Zara are established equestrians, so it makes sense that the two prefer to spend their time in the countryside rather than in London.

The Queen’s third child, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, moved into the 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park in 2004 with his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Before he lived there, it was the Queen Mother’s Windsor residence until her death in 2002.

It is rumored that Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, joined the family at the Windsor property in 2008 and still lives there, even though the couple divorced in 1996.

Princess Eugenie and her fiancé Jack Brooksbank moved into Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace, next door to Harry and Meghan, after announcing their engagement in early 2018.

Princess Beatrice spends most of her time in New York, where she works as the Vice President of Partnerships and Strategy at Afiniti, a New York City-based artificial intelligence company, per her LinkedIn page.
