Miu Miu Women's Tales Returns To The Venice Film Festival

With short films by Chloe Sevigny and Celia Rowlson-Hall

Way before slogan tees and pink pussy hats at marches, Miuccia Prada has been flying the flag of feminism in fashion. Not just through her designs, but also through various efforts including Miu Miu Women's Tales—a series of short films commissioned by the brand, each is helmed by a different female director and aims to "investigate vanity and femininity in the 21st century."

This year, the 74th Venice Film Festival saw the screening of No.13, Carmen by Chloë Sevigny, and No.14, (The [End) Of History Illusion] by Celia Rowlson-Hall, who join the likes of Miranda July, Ava DuVernay and Naomi Kawase. Sevigny—who is no stranger to the brand, having starred in two Miu Miu campaigns for spring/summer 1996 and autumn/winter 2012 — follows up her 2016 directorial debut, Kitty, with a short about Carmen Lynch, a stand-up comedienne, as we follow her from the stage and into her daily life.

According to Sevigny, she set out to "[make] a short-film about being a woman, celebrity and ego. It’s about the love of the craft, the love of the art, the repetition of it.” Rowlson-Hall, best known for her work on Girls, and music videos for Alicia Keys and MGMT, takes us into a nuclear bunker, complete with a mini-golf course, dance floor, swimming pool, two jacuzzis... and a mermaid. “I wanted to explore commercialism in the face of fear, creating a spectacle to distract and entertain,

an escape from our present day reality.”

Alongside the screening of the films were a series of conversations: Between the two directors, as well as a stellar line-up of some of Hollywood's brightest sparks, including Laura Harrier, Zosia Mamet and Rowan Blanchard, moderated by Penny Martin. Naturally, everyone was decked out flawlessly in Miu Miu, of course.
