The placement of your blush can make a world of difference to your face: if you apply it too low, it can drag your cheeks down but if you apply it too high, you run the risk of looking like you belong on the set of a high school drama production. Factor in highlighter and contour powder and it might all seem a little too overwhelming. Here’s how to work a blusher, contour powder and highlighter for selfie-ready cheeks!

Step 1: Contour

Contouring can be tricky, but when done right, it can help lift your features and slim your face. Sweep NARS’ Bronzing Powder in Laguna, $65, under your cheekbones to sculpt your face and blend towards the corners of your cheeks and hairline to soften harsh lines. We like using NARS’ Ita Kabuki Brush, $86 for this step as it offers ultra-precision for sculpting. Alternatively, you can use an angled contour brush.

Step 2: Highlight

After defining your cheekbones with a bronzing powder, make them more pronounced by applying a highlighting powder on the tops of your cheekbones. Opt for those with super fine reflecting pigments for a fresh and natural effect.

Step 3: Add Colour

Now that you’ve sculpted your cheeks, it’s time to use a powder blush to impart a healthy flush. For a youthful rosiness, apply blush onto the apples of your cheeks. If you’re not sure where to place the colour, just smile to locate the fullest part of your cheeks. When in doubt, pick a peachy blush as this combines both warm and cool undertones to flatter any skin tones. Plus, choose a one in a matte texture like M.A.C’s Powder Blush in Melba, $40, for a softer, more natural finish. Sweep in a circular motion so it diffuses seamlessly into the bronzer and highlighter.
