Perspective is everything. What may seem ordinary can be reimagined into something extraordinary, as American artist Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) has demonstrated through his artistic legacy.

Having made his mark in history, Wesselmann’s loud and proud creations continue to live on in the new Coach x Tom Wesselmann collection that was envisioned by Coach’s creative director Stuart Vevers, in close collaboration with the late artist’s family and estate.

Renowned as one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s, Wesselmann’s signature works include dynamic collages that incorporate oversized everyday objects and vibrant colours, as an unabashed tribute to American heritage and pop culture.

While intentionally moving away from abstract expressionism, Wesselmann once declared: “The prime mission of my art is to make figurative art as exciting as abstract art.”

Embodying the playful and optimistic spirit that the artist himself is known for, the Coach x Tom Wesselmann collection features the artist’s unmistakable touches such as colourful graphic motifs, including lips, flowers and still life with oversized objects.

For art aficionados, each garment is itself an ode to Wesselmann’s quintessential work.

Signature motifs are boldly imprinted on Coach icons such as the Rogue and Duffle bags and shearling jackets, while also richly embellished onto the luxury fashion brand’s signature jacquard and heritage glove-tanned leather, paired with prints and sequined embroidery.

Creative director Vevers describes Wesselmann’s work as “sensory and joyful, inspired by the extraordinary found in the everyday” and says that the Coach x Tom Wesselmann collection is designed to introduce the artist to a new generation.

“This collaboration—within a colourful Wesselmann world inspired by our House codes—is a tribute to the sense of pleasure Tom found in the process of creating,” explains Vevers. “I am very honoured to have worked with his family to bring it to life, and proud to share his work with a new generation.”

The Coach x Tom Wesselmann collection will be available in store from 7 July 2022 at Coach Wisma and Coach Marina Bay Sands (MBS).
