Sofia Coppola Talks About Her Must-Have Gems, Jewellery And Personal Style
When she was in Singapore for Cartier’s Etourdissant exhibition and gala, we quizzed Hollywood royalty Sofia Coppola about her thoughts on gems, jewellery and style
On her lucky gem…
I think it was the time that The Virgin Suicides, my first movie, was coming out; and my Chinese acupuncturist gave me jade for good luck. I love jade and I feel like it has some energy to it. I was nervous because it was my first movie; and when she gave me that, it made me feel better. She’s some sort of a Yoda-type of person so I felt protected.
On her first watch…
My first nice watch is from Cartier. I bought it myself when I was in Paris doing Marie Antoinette, I think.
It was a present to myself after making that movie; for all that hard work. It was a small, vertical evening one; really delicate.
On Cartier…
Oh, it’s hard to pick one word to describe Cartier. To me, it’s kind of the ultimate; and I like that Cartier is about love. It’s something intimate that you can get either for yourself or someone close to you. I love jewellery because I think it’s sentimental and it reminds you of moments and events. I feel like everything I have is from the important people in my life. My brother gave me a Trinity necklace; we’re close.
On the Panthère…
I’ve always liked the Panthère; it’s fun. My husband surprised me on my birthday with a little Panthère ring once, which I love. It looks beautiful and classic with fun mixed in; they’re like little toys.
On Cartier’s Red Box…
I have good memories of getting gifts from Cartier, like a bracelet, for Christmas; it’s all very exciting. And the red box? I think a woman always likes to receive Cartier’s red boxes. You know they hold beautiful creations; sophisticated, Parisian, chic, but understated; which I like. And it’s really classic. You can have it for years and years and still love it.
