Why Kim Kardashian West and Other Celebrities Are Freezing Their Social Media Accounts

    Kim Kardashian West is pausing her social media for an important cause. The reality star and business mogul announced on her personal Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts that she would be freezing her Facebook and Instagram platforms in support of the #StopHateforProfit campaign.

    Launched with the idea to prioritise people over hate, the campaign aims to bring attention to the lack of accountability Facebook (which owns Instagram) has faced in regard to valuing profits over the racist propaganda and disinformation that often fill its network's timelines. Other celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Kerry Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Michael B. Jordan have also pledged to freeze their personal social media accounts for 24 hours to bring awareness to the campaign.

    "I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can't sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation - created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed," wrote Kardashian West. "Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy. Please join me tomorrow when I will be 'freezing' my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit."

    Kardashian West isn't the only high-profile figure speaking out against Facebook. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also staunch supporters of the social media campaign and have encouraged CEOs of major brands and companies to follow suit in stopping the spread of hate and misinformation.
