Nobody does the underdog to fan-favourite pipeline better than Single’s Inferno 4’s Bae Ji Yeon. Viewers might remember her as the charming fitness fanatic who was left on the island in the first episode. But the spatial designer and model has emerged as one of the series’ most popular cast members post-show, after doubling down on her efforts to create online content on Instagram and YouTube.

The proof? The waves of videos on TikTok recreating her makeup style and outfits, solidifying her as one to watch in the fashion and beauty space. This has no doubt played a part in her clinching partnerships with labels such as Verish. In collaboration with the Korean brand, she created Light Fit, a line of activewear designed to sculpt the body while allowing the wearer to move effortlessly.

We caught up with Bae Ji Yeon at the Verish booth during New Bahru’s recent Extra Curious Activities fair to get the lowdown on her experience on the viral dating show, her relationship with her castmates, her plans for the future and more.

Tell us about what you’re working on at the moment.

Right now, I’ve been diligently studying design and I’m also active as a model. I’ve also been trying all sorts of different things.

How would you describe your style?

Hmmm… kind of like a hot and hip older sister!

Can you share some tips to stay motivated when it comes to fitness and working out?

If you push yourself too hard, you’ll feel exhausted and get injured. So don’t over-exert yourself, and work on what you can slowly and consistently. Even if you’re still weak or can’t do much, what’s important is that you’re still doing something.

Tell us about your most memorable experience on Single’s Inferno.

It was when I was left alone on the island. Honestly, I shed a tear when I was alone in that tent. I had existential thoughts like: “Who am I? Where am I?”

But in retrospect, I think that was the most interesting time for me.

What would you have done differently?

I think I would have been a bit more forward and more courageous.

How has your life changed since going on the show, and what have you learnt about yourself?

The thing that has changed the most is that a lot of people are now supporting me, and a lot of people like me, and I’m really proud of that. Thanks to Single’s Inferno, I was able to share my optimistic energy with others and that makes me proud.

And when I go out to eat, I get a lot of free things at restaurants!

Which participants are you still close with?

I’m still close with all of them! I’m especially close with the female participants and I meet up with Arin and Youjin pretty often.

What’s next for you?

I’ve actually mostly been preparing to go on shows, and I have a lot of people I’d love to meet. I’ve been working really hard on this.
