Seen on the runways at Dior, Gucci and Coach, and worn by supermodels Bella and Kendall on the streets, patchwork outfits have been a hit with the It girl set. More country than high fashion, the trend has homespun roots and summons images of handmade quilts and worn-out garments repaired with odd remnants of cloth. But with fashion’s current ethos of “more is more”, the idea of mixing and matching prints while combining colour and texture feels fresh, young and relevant. An added bonus for modern day eco-warriors is the sustainability slant, as some brands make their patchwork pieces by repurposing leftover scraps of fabric. A new take is to wear earthy accents like brown, red and orange with light washed denim for an unexpected contrast. Patchwork doesn’t have to be confined to denim either—textured fabrics like suede, leather and tweed add dimension and richness to the look. Worn with sneakers or boots and a nude face, it hails the triumphant return of rustic chic.
