The extravagant 10-day royal wedding in Brunei that started on 7 January has kicked off the year with a bang. Lavish ensembles and opulent jewels were expected for Prince Abdul Mateen and Yang Mulia Anisha Rosnah’s nuptials, but it was the bride’s dazzling tiara that caught our eye.

The 18K white gold and diamond tiara in question was spotted when the couple made their first public appearance at the Istana Nurul Iman palace yesterday during a procession. But this wasn’t the tiara’s first royal outing—it was originally commissioned for Princess Azemah’s, Prince Mateen’s sister, wedding in January 2023.

The tiara was designed and crafted by Singaporean jeweller Flower Diamond, helmed by founder Belinda Chua and creative director Roslind Ng, which has been creating elegant bespoke jewellery with contemporary flair since 1996. The ongoing relationship between the local jeweller and the royal family began over 30 years ago when Prince Mateen’s mother, Datin Paduka Seri Hajah Mariam, made an appointment to select and purchase gifts.

Fast forward to her daughter’s wedding in 2023, she sent a set of loose diamonds to Chua and Ng to create the custom tiara. Ng sketched three designs based on Princess Azemah’s wish for a modern tiara, her facial features, her sense of style, hints on what the Princess would wear on her big day and the shape of the gemstones.

After the design was chosen, Ng and Chua created a bronze prototype for a fitting with the princess to assess the measurements of the custom tiara and to receive feedback. After two prototypes and eight months of refining, the actual tiara was completed in white gold and set with 832 individual diamonds in various cuts—square, oval, pear and round—weighing in together at 132 carats.

The main challenge was sourcing diamonds of different sizes that could also match in terms of shape and quality, which is no easy feat as natural diamonds can differ drastically from one another. The team also needed to keep Princess Azemah’s request for a modern and lighter design in mind while balancing the glitz of the diamonds.

Of course, for Anisha Rosnah’s wedding, the team had to make careful adjustments to fit perfectly on the bride for her most special day, or rather days.

As the exquisite ceremonies and celebrations come to an end today, who knows what the bride might wear next? But, something tells us that it will be undeniably glamorous too.
