A Star Is Born: Eight Style Tips To Steal From Lady Gaga

Paws up! We are celebrating Mother Monster’s 33rd birthday on Mar 28 in style

8 style tips to learn from our March birthday star, Lady Gaga

Whether you know her from her hit singles like Just Dance, Bad Romance or Born This Way, amongst many others, or for her avant-garde and eclectic sense of fashion (remember the meat dress made of raw beef that she wore to 2010 MTV Video Music Awards?), Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is undoubtedly one of the biggest pop music sensation of our time.

Known by her stage name Lady Gaga and the mother to her fans, whom she endearingly refers to as ‘monsters’, Gaga studied music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and initially faced difficulties finding traction for her career due to her experimental sounds. She worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing. and only got her big break when Just Dance and Poker Face from her debut album The Fame (2008) hit airwaves and became chart-topping hits.

One of her most iconic performances was for her song Applause from the Artpop album at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Besides giving a killer performance while dancing and jumping (in heels I might add), it was her multiple outfit changes that really caught the attention of fans. Many believe that each look that she had changed into mid-performance signified a milestone in her career and pays homage to her fans for seeing her through her many transformations.

And it is this constant evolution that is Gaga’s greatest strength. She stood out from the crowd of pop singers with her unique musicality, and has since collaborated with superstars including Beyoncé and Tony Bennett. From a deranged patient in Bad Romance and a rosary-swallowing nun in Alejandro to waitress-turned-superstar in A Star Is Born movie alongside Bradley Cooper, her transformations are indeed endless.

Besides being celebrated for her musical prowess and acting chops (she has garnered multiple awards, including an Oscar, a BAFTA, two Golden Globes and several Grammys as well as MTV Video Music Awards), she is also not one to shy away from political activism. A survivor of rape at the age of 19, Gaga has become a force that supports women’s rights issues, as seen in her singing an original, Til It Happens to You, for a 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground that talks about sexual assaults on American college campuses.

Furthermore, Gaga has openly supported LGBT rights and has also created her own non-profit organisation, Born This Way Foundation, to help empower youths and tackle bullying.

While there might be a million reasons to love Lady Gaga, we just need one: Her amazing sense of style. So in honour of her 33rd birthday on March 28, let us take a look at her best looks and learn a styling tip or two.

1. Deck the halls in silver

Lady Gaga loves her silver and diamonds, and she has frequently been seen on red carpets in this metallic hue, such as at the A Star Is Born premiere (pictured in a Givenchy gown with Bvlgari jewels) and this year’s Grammy Awards. The reason why it works so well is because the silver tones pair perfectly with her cool skin tone. If that’s you but you don’t want to go all out, try pairing a silver cropped top with a flowy black skirt. As for those with warm skin tones, silver is probably not the shade for you. We recommend flattering your skin tone by going with gold jewellery and warmer colours like yellows, oranges and reds.

2. Go Animalistic

Are we really surprised that Lady Gaga is a fan of animal prints? After all, she has worn a dress made of meat before. We love how Gaga contrasted two different animal prints (leopard blazer with crocodile pants from Versace SS ’92) but kept it harmonious as both of the separates are in the same colour scheme. Genius. But if going animal on animal is too much for you, start small with a printed top first.

3. Keep it in the family

Gaga’s take on airport fashion is unconventional to say the least. It comprises an entire outfit decked out in deep plum shade shade, from her lips, pleated dress and bag all the way down to her killer heels. While we are loving her comprehensive take on monochromatic, you probably would want to switch to something more comfortable, like plum sweatpants and a pair of sneakers, for a long flight.

4. Color Co-ordinate

Despite being dressed in simple colours, Lady Gaga’s outfit looks sophisticated and très chic. Why? It’s because she applied the basic principles of colour theory and wheel by using complementary colours, which in this case is yellow (dress) and blue (jacket). Her silver boots is a neutral colour that adds that sparkly, Gaga factor. She wisely kept everything else to the minimal, only donning a pair of statement glasses to round up the look.

5. An LBD Never Hurt Nobody

Lady Gaga wearing a strappy backless LBD on the American Music Awards is testament to the versatility of this humble creation. Whether it’s a formal occasion or a casual date with the partner, a black dress will never fail you. Jazz it up with strong eyes and a cool lip colour. Of course, the towering black pumps she wore is entirely optional to you.

6. Make It A Statement

Got a simple outfit and hairdo? You can still amp up the look and dress it with statement accessories like what Lady Gaga did with her earrings. Her dangle earrings also serve an additional purpose: To direct the eyes to the cutout window of her brown dress and accentuate her bust. You got it, you better flaunt it.

7. Keep It White

Lady Gaga loves her white pantsuit, and for good reason because she looks absolutely stunning in it. If your workplace isn’t an environment where you can wear the blazer in such a revealing manner, opt for a sharp shirt underneath. If not, go with a cami top or bralette for the middle ground.

8. Put On A Pair Of  Funky Eyewear

If you’re wanting to change up your look, opt for a pair of funky, statement eyewear next. Not only can it change up your look in a jiffy, the cost of getting a pair of spectacles would cost significantly less than changing your entire look and wardrobe. You can start with a pair of dramatic cat-eyes like what Gaga did here.
