Art, Fashion And Legacy: A Deep Dive Into The Louis Vuitton x Murakami 2025 Re-Edition Collection
Get reacquainted with the Louis Vuitton x Murakami collaboration, its impact from their 20-year bond, and key highlights from the newly launched 2025 Re-Edition collection.
In 2002, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami did what no artist had ever done. He took the revered Louis Vuitton Monogram, unchanged for nearly 100 years, and drenched it in 33 riotous colours. What seemed like an audacious move at the time became a cultural phenomenon, merging the world of luxury fashion with contemporary art in ways never seen before.
When the collaboration debuted on the spring/summer 2003 runway under Marc Jacobs’s creative direction, it didn’t just revitalise the brand’s trajectory—it set a new precedent for how luxury could embrace boundary-pushing art. Two years earlier, Jacobs had laid the groundwork by collaborating with American artist Stephen Sprouse, whose graffiti-inspired logomania graphics hinted at a more playful, experimental direction for the Maison.

Building on this foundation, Murakami elevated the concept with his blend of kawaii-pop imagery. Commercially, the result was a collection that generated over US$300 million in its first year.

It also paved the way for other houses to embrace the fusion of art and fashion, inspiring creative marriages like Loewe’s partnership with William Morris and Suna Fujita, and Dior’s work with Daniel Arsham. Now, two decades later, the Louis Vuitton x Murakami Re-edition is more than a nostalgic revival. It’s a celebration of artistry, technological innovation, and a lasting creative legacy.

The Louis Vuitton x Murakami Re-edition collection, which launched on 1 January 2025, is one of the most anticipated luxury launches of the decade. Leaked images began circulating online in late 2024, sparking feverish pre-order speculation and a resurgence in demand for vintage Murakami pieces. Zendaya, the face of Louis Vuitton, was the first celebrity spotted carrying the collection, namely the Side Trunk in Monogram Multicolor—cementing its relevance for a new generation.
The collection features over 170 pieces, leveraging high-definition digital printing and Louis Vuitton’s savoir-faire. Standouts include: The made-to-order Malle Wardrobe that will arrive filled with 33 Speedy bags; the Monogram Multicolore fragrance trunk, alongside Attrape-Rêves and Imagination bottles transformed by Murakami’s art; Murakami’s motifs, like the Superflat Panda, appear on charms that adorn bags, jewellery and small leather goods. New additions such as the dog collars, coffee cups, puzzles and skateboards, bring a slice of luxury to a wider audience.

In Singapore and globally, the new collection will come alive through immersive pop-ups and boutique activations, plunging fans into Murakami’s dizzyingly colourful world. A second chapter, launching in March, will highlight the perfect-for-spring Cherry Blossom motif, while a third instalment mid-2025 may showcase Murakami’s whimsical Cherries design.
While this collection revisits beloved motifs, few updates of the original release are included. Instead, the re-edition celebrates reimagined favourites and newer designs. In addition, to mark its 20th anniversary, each piece will feature a special leather tag or stamp, distinguishing it from the vintage originals.

A Guide to the Murakami Motifs
Central to the re-edition’s enduring appeal are the motifs that defined the original collaborations. Here’s a closer look at the icons making their return in 2025.
Monogram Multicolor

Murakami’s transformation of the Louis Vuitton monogram in 33 vibrant colours remains iconic. “When I met Marc in his office at the Louis Vuitton headquarters, he told me that he wanted to renew the brand’s monogram and wanted me to come up with ideas with him... The meeting, however, lasted all of 15 minutes. What?” Murakami once recalled on an Instagram post, reflecting on the simplicity of an idea that changed everything. This bold design is now reimagined with high-definition printing, bringing an even sharper vibrancy to pieces.
Superflat Panda

This playful character was first seen in the 2003 short film Superflat Monogram, which features a young girl’s whimsical journey through a surreal Vuitton-branded world with Superflat Panda, capturing Murakami’s blend of kawaii and high art. Its return on sneakers, skateboards, and leather goods, adds a whimsical yet sophisticated touch to the collection.
Superflat garden with smiling flowers

Perhaps Murakami’s most universally recognisable motif, these cheerful flowers continue to brighten everything from perfumes to handbags in the new collection.
Hands and Cherry Blossom
Louis Vuitton X Murakami Re-edition Motif: Hands and Cherry Blossom
In 2007, this limited-edition print was launched at the Takashi Murakami exhibit at Los Angeles MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art). The design featured the monogram covered in colourful camouflage, smiling daisies and cartoon gloves. For the 2025 re-edition, Hands has been reimagined with more vivid hues and blooms. With its smiling flowers and pastel hues, this motif embodies Murakami’s knack for combining elegance with childlike joy, a perfect match for spring 2025’s Chapter Two.
