Fashion Easter Eggs You May Have Missed In These Music Videos and Lyrics

From happiness to nostalgia and even sadness, music has a way invoking emotions in people—just like fashion. You may not have realised this, but fashion and music has always had a symbiotic relationship. Cher, Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, each revolutionised the world of fashion in their time and the world has never been the same. These days, however, the way musicians influence fashion and vice-versa are very different. They do it with their music videos (à la Michael Jackson), their lyrics and especially with what they wear to events (Cher at the Met Gala 1974, anyone?). So, we've compiled a list of songs and music videos with fashion Easter eggs you might've missed and when they're be perfect to listen to.

For when you need an escape

If you’re a fan of fashion films, you need to watch ERDEM x H&M: The Secret Life of Flowers by Bahz Luhrmann. He took inspiration from the 1998 film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectation starring Gwyneth Paltrow as Estella and Ethan Hawke as Pip. The character, Lady Demere, in the campaign is based off Miss Havisham (or Ms. Dinsmoor in the movie. And the Pip-ish character, originally played by Ethan Hawke in the film, is portrayed by Lord Voldemort’s nephew. And by that, we mean the actor, Ralph Fiennes. Luhrmann worked his magic and created a film filled with whimsy, mystery and desire through the set design, dialogues and most importantly, the soundtrack. Hypnotised by Years and Years was the glue that held the fantasy together, and kept it there. Which goes to show how important music is in fashion and film to portray a particular emotion. It needs to be on your fashion playlist, stat.

For when you’re feeling yourself

If you’re and R&B/Soul girl, you’ll love this track from Solange’s latest album, When I Get Home. Italian fashion luxury brand, Gucci, is mentioned 24 times (yes, we counted) in My Skin My Logo by Solange. Is she making a political statement in empowering people of colour? Or does she just love Gucci that much? Chances are, it’s the former. Either way, it’s a bop and you need to get on the bandwagon.

For when you’re feeling rich

The highly anticipated Iggy Azalea comeback is here and she did not disappoint. Her new single, Started is all about the hustle that she’s never shied away from speaking publicly about. In her music video, Azalea wears several stereotypical sugar baby ‘costumes’, which makes sense since the entire video is about her killing her much older husband for his fortune. It’s almost as if she’s mocking the situation in a campy, Azalea sort of way, that’ve missed over the years. In the words of Kandi Burruss, it was boughetto—an intersection between bougie and ghetto, a term she used to describe ex-Housewives of Atlanta castmate, Phaedra Parks’ baby shower. That said, I have to admit: The music video is giving me Paparazzi by Lady Gaga flashbacks, which let’s be honest, revolutionised pop culture. But hey, she put her own spin on it and the music is lit.

For when you’re feeling groovy

BTS (방탄소년단) '작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy With Luv) feat. Halsey’s music video looks like something straight out of a Wes Anderson film. It’s complete with pastel hues, rule of thirds cinematography and complementary art direction in the form of props and set design. And if you pay close attention, each scene is colour coded and features monochromatic outfits, representative of the trends we’ve on the Spring Summer 2019 runways. It’s also a beautiful blending of two cultures, Western and Eastern in the form of music which is transcends language barriers—because you listen to music with your soul. Oh my my my ~

For when you’re feeling diva-ish

Our all-time favorite diva, first of her name, topper of charts in every decade, the unaged, Mariah Carey, gave us the anthem we didn’t deserve but absolutely needed in our lives. GFTO by Mariah Carey from her latest album, Caution, is everything we ever wanted to say to that one man in our live, but never did. Or at least, not as eloquent as she put it. But she didn’t stop there. In her music video, she gave us the 101 on dressing a diva—silk slip dresses à la Calvin Klein 1995, lace bodice and feathered cover ups.

For when you’re feeling cultured

Beyoncé and Jay-Z blessed us with a bop, fabulous cinematography and multiple haute couture moments. In the beginning of the video where the duo stood in front of the Mona Lisa, Beyonce was wearing a pink suit by Peter Pilotto and Jay-Z wore a similar one in mint green. If you don’t know who Peter Pilotto is, you might want to get on it. They’re one of the largest and most successful fashion brands in recent years and are sold in revered retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Liberty and Dover Street Market. Later on in the video we see Jay-Z and Beyoncé decked out in couture fineries from luxury houses such as John Galliano, Versace and Gucci. For when you're feeling romantic

Who would've guessed that six years after their disbandment the Jonas Brothers would get back together, with a hit no less. From opulent Italian-esque gowns with a side of camp to pastel pink tea parties and Versace boxer briefs, the Sucker music video is filled with fashion. And the fact that the brothers are easy on the eyes doesn't hurt either. We love listening to this song when we're feeling romantic.
